# Practical Data Governance
Data governance is often viewed as a "no" department. In 2025, we view it as an enablement department.
1. Federated Governance
Move away from a central "data committee" and instead empower individual domains to own their data quality.
2. Automating Stewardship
Use tools that automatically tag PII (Personally Identifiable Information) and track lineage. This reduces the manual burden on data stewards.
3. Data as a Product
Treat your datasets like software products. They should have SLAs (Service Level Agreements), owners, and clear documentation for "customers" (analysts).
